This I already mentioned: the pages, especially your front page should be quick to load. A front page with 10 photographs of your beautiful country may be nice looking but if it takes forever to load from Uganda, don’t expect to make friends with LionNet Uganda users !
Your front page is just like the front page of a daily newspaper. It should at the first glance show the important things: what, why, where ? Especially it should give is just a few words or graphic elements the reason why users should go deeper down into your web of pages.
Consider who you are writing to. We made the mistake when we started that we thought we were writing to the almost next door neighbour, just like our club is operating just on very local level. But we put maybe one twentieth of the text in English. My surprise was great when I started to get positive feedback from all over the world: USA, Canada, South America, South Africa, New Zealand. But from nowhere closer than Antwerpen. Now we have quite separate pages with quite different contents for readers that speak Finnish and English. And the English is our main language.
