The spread of the Internet is spectacular. In most areas of the net annual growth rates are around 300-500%. Especially commercial companies are rushing to the Internet. Already in the summer of 1996 it was estimated that at least 1,4 million citizens in the Nordic countries used the net at least once in two weeks. Today in Finland only, about half a million people are classified as Internet users.

The penetration of the net to the society is deepest in the world in the Nordic countries. The countries with most Internet connected computers per capita are Finland, Iceland, Norway and the USA

Why ?

In countries with good telecommunication infrastructure and real price competition the net is cheap, available everywhere and easy to use and the governments are spending much money to make their citizens “net literate”.

Handier and cheaper than the phone, more reliable than the fax, perfect for one to many communication and it doesn’t need big investments.
